HY! PER! ACT! IVE! is an audio-visual installation developed as part of my BA thesis project at the Faculty of Design and Art in Bolzano.
The project aims at raising awareness around the diagnosis of ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) among children, a topic that has created divergent opinions between families and medical experts in the last decades.
The idea for the project was inspired by a personal interest in the subject matter, after having met families with children diagnosed with ADHD and having heard their dissimilar approaches to similar situations.
Research, Concept Development & Design
Three distinctive narratives as audio-visual stories
After conducting wide research through interviews with doctors, teachers, parents and children, I decided to highlight the stories of three different families, which seemed to have the most contrasting views on the topic.
An audio-visual installation appeared to be the most suitable medium to translate the stories into immersive narratives, in which voiceover, sound, color and visuals come together to convey the feelings and thoughts of the parents of these children.
Three animations are projected simultaneously on a cubic structure, as we hear three parents of different children talking about their own experiences with the diagnosis (the stories are rewritten under pseudonyms, and the voiceovers are recreated by actors, to protect the families’ privacy).
The user can both experience the installation from the outside of the structure - watching one story at a time - or by entering it - watching the animations playing simultaneously and identifying the analogies and differences between the stories.
The project doesn’t aim at giving a complete overview of the possible different approaches to such a complex topic, but instead at showing that one solution doesn’t always fit all.
